Holidays
may be over, but Utah will remain mired in winter for a while longer.
Winter or not, insects will try to make themselves at home if they
have not already. People can keep that from happening by taking a few
steps.
First order of business
is to inspect the exteriors of the home for areas that make good
habitats. Generally, insects look for spots in the exterior where
they get food, moisture, and shelter. They, like any other creature,
want places to hide.
One
exterior hiding place is the downspout due to accumulated debris that
make a good habitat for
insects. If anything, that gives another good reason to remove
debris from the downspout, as well as ensuring that it directs water
from the roof down the home.
Next step is to take
out anything that also gives insects a good place to stay. Aside from
trash, of course, that means removing debris such as bricks, compost
piles, and old boards. Putting firewood away from the house is
another must-do.
Last
but not least, is to replace exterior lights when possible.
Traditional bulbs also attract insects, so replacing those bulbs with
yellow or sodium vapor lights will do the trick.
Should people do any or
all of the above, they can increase their chances of a bug-free
winter.
