Utah takes pride in
being home to a rich, diverse ecosystem where humans coexist
peacefully with nature. Sometimes, though, teeny tiny critters invade
human spaces, and none among these critters causes more disturbances
than the eight-legged creature, the spider.
Spiders can be quite
invaluable when they prey on insect pests outside homes. Yet, for all
the help they give, they also pose a danger to humans with their
perilous venom. Some venomous spiders living in Utah include the
black widow and the brown recluse.
Here are some ways Utah
natives can control spiders in their homes:
- Clear away stored materials or debris outside the home which can attract spiders. Spiders are usually attracted to cool, dark places.
- Use a vacuum cleaner or broom to remove cobwebs and egg sacs. Doing this also scares spiders away most of the time.
- Pay attention to your basement, attic, garage, closets and any dark, quiet places inside the home. Control the humidity and remove unnecessary clutter in those areas. Installing sticky traps can help you catch several spiders at once.
- Stop spiders from invading your home by installing tight-fitting window screens and doors. Clean window shutters regularly. Sealing and caulking cracks around the home foundation, doors and windows can restrain spiders.
- Ask your local pest control to evaluate the degree of spider invasion in your home. These pros can help determine how much and how long the extermination process would take, as well as perform regular probes for spiders.
